My Availability

God has really blessed my business, and I stay very busy. But with all things “life”, there are ebbs and flows. The best thing to do is to get in touch with me as soon as you are sure you want to work with me, so I can assess what your end goal is, how much time will be required on my end, and prep you on what you need to focus on to ensure that you are not overworking yourself. I would say that a good rule of thumb for my availability is that I stay booked out one month in advance.

I have adopted a “Miracle on 34th Street” approach to business. If I can not get to your project in a timely manner for your launch date, I do have a couple of other vetted designers that I can recommend, based on your project’s needs. The main thing is that we get you taken care of.

How long does it take once the project is started?
Bundle package (front/back cover, interior for print, pdf, and Kindle/epub)

Allow 1 month from the day I am available to start your project. It’s not that it takes ME one month to do my work, but between communication, revisions, proof-readers, CreateSpace’s review process, waiting on a print proof, reviewing the print proof, making a last round of revisions, reuploading, etc., it is usually right at one month before you are ready to release your baby out into the world.

Cover only (Print and/or Digital)

Allow 1 week from the day I am available to start your cover. I know I’m not the least expensive designer on the block, and there is a reason for that. A lot of research, time, care, and correspondence goes into each project, even if it’s a single-sided cover.

Interior for digital distribution only (downloadable interactive PDF and Kindle/epub)

Allow two weeks from the from the day I am available to start your project.

Full interior package (print book, downloadable interactive PDF and Kindle/epub)

Requires approximately 3 weeks from the day I am available to start your project, because I do recommend getting a print proof before going live. There are always a couple of typos hanging around, even if the document was professionally edited.

Suggested Order of Events
For the Bundle Package
  1. After the initial phone consultation, if we decide to move forward, I will send the client a simple electronic contract. (There is no charge for any call with a client or potential client. I only charge if someone is wanting consulting but does not want to hire me for my services.)
  2. Once the contract is signed, I will send an invoice via Paypal for half of the agreed upon project cost.
  3. I will set up a shared dropbox folder for us, which I will maintain.
  4. I will send the client a cover design questionnaire to fill out.
  5. Using the information that the client gave me on the questionnaire, I will work up the front cover and then consult with client. We will work together to discuss any necessary revisions until we get a solid front cover. Then we repeat this process for the back cover.
  6. The 3D mockup, “coming soon” ad, and the individual design elements and style sheet are generated so the client can start promoting.
  7. When the client has finished with final editing of the book’s content, I will start to work on that portion and import her Word/Google Docs/Pages/PDF document into Adobe InDesign.
  8. I will send over a sample page(s) for the client to review. I will make revisions as necessary, and we will work together to lock-in the design for the interior, which will be reflective of the cover.
  9. After the book is finished, I will send over the full interior with line-numbering for review.
  10. All comments/corrections will need to be noted using Dropbox’s commenting system.
  11. There are usually three or four digital reviews before the file is uploaded to CreateSpace/Ingramspark/etc.
  12. I suggest ordering a print proof before going live and having a fresh proofreader go through the print book if at all possible. A print proof can be shipped directly to an individual. All corrections will need to be noted using Dropbox’s commenting system. I will make sure that you and any proofreaders have a link to the corresponding PDF.
  13. After all corrections have been made to the interior, I will generate the epub and Kindle files and send those to the client for review.
  14. Once approved, I will upload the Kindle to Amazon via the CreateSpace portal so that the print book and the Kindle book sync up correctly on Amazon’s site. If you are also using IngramSpark for distribution, I will assist with that, too.
  15. I have found that there are always a few more typos or minor text corrections that are located as the book hits circulation, and I will always be available (Lord willing!) to make those small updates and reupload the files.

  7. If the cover is for a print book, I will adjust the spine to the proper width after your interior is completed and we have a definite page count. I will then generate your cover for the CreateSpace/IngramSpark/etc. Each printer has different requirements.
  8. I suggest ordering a print proof before going live to check for color variance and just general proofing. All corrections will need to be noted using Dropbox’s commenting system. I will make sure that you have a link to the corresponding PDF.
  9. If there are no corrections, then you are ready to roll. If corrections need to be made, then I will make those corrections and reupload.
