Getting a feel for each author’s personality is key, and I find speaking with you by phone is a great way to do that. A lot can be said in a laugh, a sigh, or…a pause. It also helps us to see each other as a living, breathing person, not just a voiceless, faceless name on the other end of the keyboard.
During the phone call, I start with covering some basics, like what the project is about and the end-goal for the book. (Do you want to sell it at conferences? Sell to bookstores? Libraries? Trunk sales? Website? Amazon only? Use it as a way to validate yourself as a speaker?) Your answers will determine the route we take to get there.
After we have established a relationship and discussed the project, I will give you an initial verbal quote and discuss a project timeline while we are still on the phone.
