Gary Wilkinson, Illustrator

From the moment I first saw Gary's work, I was a super fan. I love that Gary's work is unique and that you know it when you see it. Gary's art is very fun, full of light, expressions, and great character design.

Gary Wilkinson is a freelance children’s illustrator and caricature artist. Born in Hull, England, Gary soon moved to Kagawa, Japan after completing his BA in “Product Design and 3D animation” at Huddersfield University. Working on illustration for both print and film, his work has been featured in the “Japan Times” newspaper and in music videos and educational textbooks. Gary also draws live and realistic caricatures for publication and private commission.

From the moment I first saw Gary’s work in Tyrannosaurus Hex and the Unluckiest Day Ever by Jay Miletsky, I was a super fan. I love that Gary’s work is unique and that you know it when you see it. Gary’s art is very fun, full of light, expressions, and great character design.

Gary and I recently completed Petey Perfectpants and the Silly Sock Puppet Problem with Jimmy Vee, and I had the opportunity to experience Gary’s work first-hand. Gary didn’t know this, but I’ve always wanted a caricature of myself, so when I saw that I got my very own caricature on the end pages, I was so thrilled!

And not just one but two! One for each end page 🙂

Gary’s talent runs deep and is not limited to just one style or vibe.

Here are a few of his other pieces I pulled that show just some of the range of his talent bank. I’m quite positive he’s capable of doing even more than he’s showing us.

Reviews of Gary's Work

“Following Vee’s 'Professor Nincompoop' (2024), this story is silly on the surface but carries a serious message: There is a time and place for perfection. Wilkinson’s colorful art often varies its perspective and framing, with larger-than-life sound effects that reflect the sock puppet’s unpredictable behavior. A tastefully funny but instructive picture book perfect for early elementary schoolers. Our verdict: Get it.”

“A fantastically fun, vibrantly written picture book with a fab ‘perfectly imperfect’ message. Highly recommended!”

“A laugh-out-loud storybook that reminds kids it’s okay not to be perfect at everything all the time! Embrace the imperfections and have fun!”
